Minutos después de que el Congreso lo exhortara a dejar su puesto, Merino dirigió un mensaje a la nación en el que dijo que su renuncia es “irrevocable” y traslado sus condolencias a las familias de los fallecidos en las protestas. “Todo el Perú está de luto, nada justifica que una legítima protesta deba desencadenar la muerte de peruanos”, aseguró.
“Vivimos en una democracia y yo quiero lo mejor para nuestro país”, afirmó, tras enfatizar que estos sucesos “deben ser profundamente investigados”.
“Los ministros continuarán en sus cargos”
El dirigente prometió hacer “el mayor de los esfuerzos” para garantizar la sucesión constitucional y subrayó que Perú “merece seguir adelante“.
Asimismo, destacó que deben garantizarse elecciones “transparentes y limpias” y que “nada ni nadie puede impedir” que se realicen el 11 de abril. “Estamos en un proceso electoral en marcha, el pueblo tiene el deber de elegir democráticamente a sus autoridades”, recalcó.
El anuncio de la renuncia de Merino fue recibido con alegría en las calles, donde miles de manifestantes seguían protestando para exigir su dimisión.
