En conferencia de prensa, la directora del Festival, Sarah Hoch, afirmó que el actor sufre de sinusitis aguda, que le impide tomar un avión. El actor iba a recibir la Cruz de Plata en la plaza principal de San Miguel de Allende a las 20:00 horas; por su parte, el actor prometió que vendrá el próximo año.
De acuerdo con Hoch, en 22 años de existencia del GIFF, es la segunda ocasión que ocurre una situación así, pues solo el director y productor Tim Burton había cancelado antes. La película Mandy, en donde participa Cage, se presentará a las 22:00 horas en el Panteón Municipal.
