La ONU llamó hoy a terminar con el estigma y la exclusión social que sufren las personas con sida y a garantizar que todo el mundo tenga acceso a tratamientos, a fin de eliminar definitivamente esta epidemia para 2030.
“La tolerancia y la concienciación es lo que ayudará a erradicar esta enfermedad”, afirmó el secretario general de Naciones Unidas, Ban Ki-moon, durante un acto en la sede de la ONU en la víspera del Día Mundial de la Lucha contra el Sida.
Según Ban, para ello es necesario proteger a las comunidades más vulnerables: las mujeres jóvenes del África Subsahariana, los hombres que tienen sexo con otros hombres y “la gente pobre que no tiene acceso a servicios y cuidados”.
El secretario recordó que el compromiso de la ONU es “no dejar a nadie atrás” y conseguir que para 2030 no hayan más infecciones, ni discriminación ni muertes causadas por el sida.
Así, llamó a dirigir los esfuerzos a construir “un mundo más sano y próspero”, en el que la dignidad de todos los grupos sociales sea protegida y respetada, y donde, independientemente de su condición social y del país en el que vivan, todo el mundo tenga acceso a medicamentos para el tratamiento y la prevención del virus.
“La epidemia del sida no ha acabado, pero podemos hacerlo”, sentenció la modelo y activista Naomi Campbell, quien también estuvo presente en el evento.
“Hoy me solidarizo con las millones de mujeres y adolescentes que corren el riesgo de padecer sida. Ellas se enfrentan a una triple amenaza: no conocer su estatus de VIH, no tener acceso a tratamientos y no estar empoderadas para protegerse del contagio”, añadió.
De acuerdo con los datos del Programa de Naciones Unidas para la Lucha contra el Sida (ONUSIDA), se calcula que 37 millones de personas en el mundo viven con el VIH, pero sólo la mitad saben que son portadoras del virus. Según ONUSIDA, esto se debe a los bajos índices de pruebas contra el VIH en ciertas regiones, a la discriminación y a la falta de concienciación social.
“Hemos visitado sitios en los que las personas infectadas con SIDA han sido excluidas de la sociedad por el hecho de inyectarse drogas o por su condición sexual”, señaló el director ejecutivo de ONUSIDA, Michel Sidibé.
En 2015 más de un millón de personas murieron por enfermedades relacionadas con el VIH, entre ellas más de 100.000 niños, si bien el número de muertes está en descenso y acumula una bajada del 45 % desde las máximas registradas en 2005.
Una de las prioridades de la ONU -como parte de los objetivos de la agenda de desarrollo sostenible- es que más de 30 millones de personas tengan acceso a medicamentos antirretrovirales para el año 2030.
Por otro lado, Sidibé destacó los importantes progresos conseguidos bajo el mandato de Ban Ki-Moon, que comenzó en 2007 y se cierra a fin de año: 18,2 millones de personas infectadas tenían acceso al tratamiento en junio de 2016, una cifra que alcanzaba los 15,8 millones en 2015 y los 7,5 millones en 2010.
Además, más del 77 % de las mujeres embarazadas contagiadas con el VIH en 2015 tuvieron acceso a estos fármacos, con los que se ha logrado prevenir la transmisión del virus a sus bebés.
Sidibé recordó la importancia de que las mujeres y las niñas reciban protección social y legal de sus gobiernos para poder tomar sus propias decisiones sobre su vida sexual y reproductiva, así como los recursos necesarios para protegerse del riesgo de contraer la enfermedad.
Por su parte, el presidente de la Asamblea General de la ONU, Peter Thomson, aseguró que, gracias a estos avances, el sida ya no es una enfermedad letal y cada vez más gente puede disfrutar de “una vida larga y productiva”, aun padeciendo esta condición.
No obstante, pidió “acelerar” el camino en la lucha contra el sida, puesto que, desde 2010, el número de nuevas infecciones por el VIH no se está reduciendo entre la población adulta.
“Debemos hacer más para ayudar a prevenir que más de un millón de personas se infecten cada año. Tenemos que educar y proveer de servicios a los jóvenes y los grupos marginados que tienen más posibilidades de contagiarse”, declaró Thomson.
