El entrenador de futbol Louis van Gaal, que dirigió al Ajax, Barcelona, Bayern de Múnich, Manchester United y a la selección holandesa, anuncia que se retira de los banquillos por motivos familiares, después de los recientes fallecimientos de un yerno y una hermana.
Técnico del Manchester United entre 2014 y 2016, su último equipo, el entrenador lleva sin trabajar desde que salió del club inglés y, a los 65 años, ha decidido abandonar los banquillos.
En declaraciones que recoge el diario holandés De Telegraaf, Van Gaal explicó que “los acontecimientos” en su familia han tenido gran peso en su decisión.
“Han pasado tantas cosas en mi familia”, dijo el ya exentrenador en relación con el reciente fallecimiento de su yerno y también de su hermana pequeña.
El técnico holandés reconoció que tras dejar el Manchester United se tomó un año sabático durante el que recibió suculentas ofertas del futbol chino y árabe, pero decidió rechazarlas.
Van Gaal explicó que su intención inicial era retirarse tras dejar el timón de la selección holandesa (2012-2014) al término del Mundial de Brasil.
“Pero luego surgió la oportunidad de Inglaterra y ese es un país fantástico para entrenar y que ahora también está en mi currículum”, agregó.
Con los “reds”, el holandés se proclamó el año pasado campeón de la FA Cup, tras pasar una temporada con la cabeza “en la guillotina” ante la falta de resultados convincentes.
Antes, Van Gaal dirigió al Bayern de Múnich (2009-2011), al AZ Alkmaar holandés (2005-2009), al Barcelona (2002-2003), a la selección holandesa (2000-2001), al Barcelona (1997-2000) y al Ajax (1991-1997).
En su palmarés acumula 20 títulos y destaca la Liga de Campeones conquistada con el Ajax (1995), así como el subcampeonato un año después, la Copa de la UEFA también con el conjunto holandés (2002).
También logró ser finalista de la Liga de Campeones en 2010 con el Bayern de Múnich y se proclamó tres veces campeón de la liga holandesa con el Ajax (1994, 1995 y 1996), de la Liga española con el Barça en 1998 y 1999, y de la alemana con el Bayern en 2010.
En sus equipos ha dirigido a futbolistas como Rivaldo, Luis Figo, Pep Guardiola, Arjen Robben, Thomas Müller, Franck Ribéry, David de Gea, Juan Mata, Ángel Di María, Radamel Falcao, Wayne Rooney, Frank Rijkaard o Patrick Kluivert.
