El OGT orbita actualmente a unos 300 kilómetros de distancia de la superficie del planeta con el objetivo de observarlo para avanzar en su conocimiento y saber, por ejemplo, si hay zonas con agua o hielo.
El satélite, provisto de su detector de neutrones, medirá en un primer momento el flujo de estas partículas esenciales en la superficie de Marte creado por el impacto de los rayos cósmicos.
“La manera en la que son emitidos y su velocidad en llegar al OGT darán pistas a los científicos sobre la composición del estrato” del planeta, refirió la ESA.
Realizar un inventario de los gases presentes en la atmósfera de Marte es una de las prioridades de la misión.
La principal misión científica del satélite, según su nota, comenzará cuando se encuentre a una órbita de unos 400 kilómetros por encima de la superficie del planeta, algo que se espera para marzo de 2018.
El satélite OGT incluía en su estructura el módulo de aterrizaje Schiaparelli.
Este módulo estaba programado para realizar pruebas científicas en la misma superficie de Marte, pero se estrelló contra este planeta.
La ESA explicó que el accidente se produjo por un fallo en los controles de descenso del Schiaparelli y se negó a tachar de fracaso la misión Exomars —organizada junto a la agencia rusa Roscosmos—, puesto que el OGT sigue orbitando en torno a Marte.
Marte es uno de los planetas más explorados desde la década de 1960. Numerosas misiones de Estados Unidos, la antigua Unión Soviética, la India, Japón y Europa han volado hasta Marte, más de 40 en total hasta ahora, aunque muchas han fracasado.
