El presidente Enrique Peña Nieto invitó hace dos semanas a dos personas: un político que repetidamente ha ofendido a los mexicanos, y una política que ha expresado a lo largo de su carrera su amistad con México y sus ciudadanos.
El primero aceptó la invitación. La segunda la rechazó.
La candidata demócrata a la Casa Blanca, Hillary Clinton, dijo que, al contrario que su rival, el republicano Donald Trump, ella no se reunirá con Peña Nieto en México antes de las elecciones del 8 de noviembre. En una entrevista con la cadena ABC, Clinton dijo que de ahora a esa fecha quiere centrarse en la economía de Estados Unidos.
Peña Nieto recibió a Trump el miércoles, en medio de la estupefacción general. La negativa de Clinton a reunirse con Peña Nieto después de la agitada visita de Trump es el epílogo de uno de los episodios más rocambolescos de la reciente diplomacia bilateral entre EU y México.
En la entrevista con ABC, el periodista David Muir pregunta a Clinton si aceptará la invitación para ir a México antes de la jornada electoral. Clinton, según un resumen distribuido por la cadena de televisión, respondió: “No”.
Y añadió: “Seguiré centrándome en lo que estamos haciendo para crear empleo en casa, en lo que estamos haciendo para asegurarnos de que los americanos tengan las mejores oportunidades en el futuro”.
Peña Nieto envió una carta a Clinton y Trump el 26 de agosto invitándoles a reunirse con él. Trump, el candidato que ha construido su campaña a base de insultos a los mexicanos, vio una oportunidad, y el miércoles 31 se plantó con su avión en Ciudad de México.
En la cadena ABC, Clinton consideró que Trump creó “un incidente diplomático”.
“Salió (de la reunión) diciendo una cosa y el Presidente mexicano le contradijo casi inmediatamente. Ni siquiera sabía cómo comunicarse efectivamente con un Jefe de Estado”, añadió.
Si la idea de Peña Nieto, al invitar a ambos candidatos, era conocer de primera mano al próximo Presidente de EU y establecer un contacto, le ha salido mal. Clinton, que fue secretaria de Estado entre el 2009 y 2013 y ya conoce al Presidente mexicano, ha evitado entrar en el juego.
